What Is a Thread Lift?
A thread lift is a long lasting but minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that lifts, sculpts, and tightens the tissue of the face, neck, or body. As skin begins to age or lose its structure, threads enhance contours, and reposition tissue in order to regain the desired complexion. These feather-like threads are able to return the tension and glow of youth.
They are made using the same materials that have been used safely in surgery for decades and when inserted under the skin are able to lift, tighten, and rejuvenate the treated area. The threads can not only alter the shape and contours of the face, but also stimulate the skin to create more collagen in its place. With this non-surgical face lift, you could be staring at a wholly rejuvenated face in the mirror!
What Are the Threads in a Thread Lift Made Of?
Absorbable Threads
- PDO: Most common threads for lifting. They are quick to absorb and stimulate collagen with less volumizing effect. PDO threads are known to heal quickly and provide fewer complications, along with less downtime. Results tend to last 12 to 24 months and work well for mild to moderate laxity.
- PLLA: Longer lasting than PDO and provides a more pronounced and sustained volumizing effect. PLLA threads can last over 2 years and are best for more significant laxity and ptosis (drooping eyelids). Although more expensive, they provide more prominent and gradual improvements for clients who are okay with a bit more downtime.
- PCL: Newest on the market and have been used for long-lasting fillers and regenerative medicine. PCL threads offer superior lifting and volumizing through improved collagen production. Therefore, they are best suitable for deeper lines and significant ptosis. They can remain intact for up to 3 years before breaking down into nontoxic monomers that the body naturally eliminates. Excellent choice for male clients with thicker skin.
Non-Absorbable Threads
There are a few options on the market. However, natural aging prevents non-absorbable threads from offering results that last indefinitely or significantly longer than absorbable ones.
As the skin heals and ages they can be prone to movement. The side effects and downtime tend to be greater, although they may be a useful addition to facial surgery.
Are There Different Shapes of Threads?
Lifting Threads
Lifting threads are able to grab and reposition the tissue. Modern versions vary in direction, density, and how the cogs are made (cut vs. molded). Lifting threads are highly customizable in order to provide the best non-surgical face lift.
Biolifting Threads
Smooth and thin, biolifting threads build a fine collagen-stimulating mesh under the skin. This points the skin to where it needs to repair and produce more collagen. They can be used alone or with lifting threads for well-rounded benefits.
Filler Threads
Usually coiled, these can enhance the lip border, fill stubborn lines, or accentuate features such as brows.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Thread Lift?
- Clients desiring rejuvenation for mild to moderate facial laxity and aging.
- Clients looking for collagen stimulation along with gentle lifting
- Clients not ready for or not requiring surgical rejuvenation
- Clients seeking a minimally invasive, in-office procedure with little downtime
Caution should be used in cases of recurrent skin infections or bleeding disorders.
What to Expect During Your Thread Lift Visit and Procedure
We begin with a detailed discussion of your aesthetic goals. You’re invited to bring questions, photos, and inspiration to represent your desired results. By the end of your consultation, you’ll understand what outcome is reasonable in terms of improvement and longevity.
Results vary by individual, and thread placement is customized based on your facial features and goals. Pre-procedure photos are typically taken during your consultation to assist in planning.
The Procedure Steps
- First we have to cleanse and prep the treatment area to ensure a safe and sanitized procedure.
- We then Inject numbing medication at thread entry points and along lifting vectors, direction of insertion, for a pain-free experience.
- Finally, the threads are inserted and antibiotic ointment is applied.
Pre- and Post-Treatment Care
- Stop NSAIDs and blood-thinning supplements 1–2 weeks prior to minimize bruising. Anticoagulants will be addressed during consultation.
- Focus skincare on gentle cleansing, moisturizing, and consistent broad-spectrum sunscreen use.
- After the procedure, it is best to sleep on your back with your head elevated for at least one week.
- Avoid strenuous activity, facial massage, lasers, or excessive facial movement for 7+ days. No biting large foods—small bites and small smiles for about a week.
- Continue gentle skincare and strict sun protection.
- Required follow-ups at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months—or as needed.
Commonly Asked Questions About
Is the thread lift procedure painful?
Numbing injections may feel a bit uncomfortable. After the treatment, soreness is common but generally well tolerated.
How much time should I take off work?
None for cheek lifts. A couple of days may be needed for lower face, neck, or brow lift. Mesh procedures using non-lifting threads can cause more swelling and usually require downtime.
Can a Thread Lift be combined with other procedures?
Yes. Botox is often combined with thread lifts in order to get a well rounded firming and lifting to the skin. Filler can be used after the threads settle. Dermal boosters can also be used to enhance results and longevity.
